Firstly, let's talk about the role of watch hairpins in watches. The correct installation of the hairspring and the swing wheel during assembly also determines the accuracy of the initial position of the swing wheel. In the process of adjusting the speed (fast slow needle), it is also here. The adjustment of the speed needle is actually to adjust the working length of the hairspring, because if the working length becomes shorter, the stiffness of the hairspring increases, and the swinging speed will accelerate. Otherwise, it will slow down, which is used to adjust the accuracy of the travel time.
So what malfunction caused the broken watch hairspring? There are actually many faults that need to be investigated one by one. Here is a brief introduction.
a. The hairspring forms a clear bowl shape: One reason is that the outer pile is installed too high and can be reinstalled, so that the outer end is on the same plane as the hairspring. Another type is that the hairspring deforms due to external forces, such as when disassembling the swing clamp plate, the swing wheel is obstructed, causing the hairspring to take on a bowl shape. The hairspring can be removed from the pendulum, and the inner pile can be placed on a conical circular needle. Use tweezers to clamp the hairspring near the outer pile and pull it in the opposite direction of deformation, but the action should not be too large. If not possible, pull it twice at a time, but it should not deform in the opposite direction again.
b. The inclination of the outer end of the hairspring causes unevenness in the hairspring: the main reason is that the outer end of the hairspring does not fit well with the outer pile and is not perpendicular. Use camera pliers to clamp the outer end fitting and adjust it so that the hairspring plane is perpendicular to the outer pile.
c. Eccentricity of the hairspring: One type is the eccentricity of the inner end of the hairspring, which is mainly affected by the bending point of the starting point of the hairspring. Its eccentricity should be adjusted by pushing and pulling the bending point. Another type is the eccentricity of the outer end of the hairspring, which mainly involves sticking the inner or outer clamp when the outer curve is stationary. The hairspring can be pushed and pulled twice at the curve with a pointed camera pliers to be in the middle of the inner and outer clamps.
d. Uneven distance between a certain frame of the hairspring (i.e. non circular): From the inside out, find the starting point of the uneven area, clamp it with a pointed pliers, and adjust the uneven area with a pointed needle until it is even.
How to deal with a broken watch spring?
Due to the fact that the quality of the hairspring can affect the timing accuracy of the watch, it is generally not advisable to repair major malfunctions. However, if there is an original cycloidal hairspring, it is recommended to replace it as much as possible. Secondly, the repair of the hairspring is a meticulous and patient job, which should be carefully observed and the fault identified before starting to solve it, striving for success at once. You can also use a magnifying glass or microscope to operate on the glass panel, and do not make repeated adjustments to avoid adverse consequences. But because hairspring is basically the most complex and difficult technique to deal with in maintenance tables, maintenance technicians need extremely rich experience. Being able to smooth out a complex ball of hairpins requires considerable patience, so sometimes when the hairpins have problems, many masters choose to replace them instead of repairing them.
